Ibn Haldun University’s Center for Gulf Studies and Global Policy (GSGP) participated as a special guest in the Gulf Historians and Archaeologists Conference organized for the 25th time, on 24-26 of August this year by the Association of Gulf Historians and Archaeologists. Center Director Prof. İsmail Numan Telci and Assist. Prof. İbrahim Vehbi Baysan, a faculty member of Ibn Haldun University’s Department of History, represented our university at the conference.

At the Gulf History and Archaeology Conference held in Salalah, the capital of Oman’s Dhofar Governorate, academic studies on the historical, cultural, and archaeological heritage of the Gulf region were discussed.

Hosted by Oman’s Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, the three-day meeting brought together more than 180 academics, researchers, and experts from Oman and other Gulf countries. As part of the program, 30 scientific papers covering different periods of the Gulf’s history, culture, and heritage were presented. In addition to archaeological research and fieldwork, the papers addressed various topics related to the region’s civilization, intellectual life, economy, and social history.

Academic Cooperation in Gulf Studies

Organized by the Association of Gulf Historians and Archaeologists, which has more than 700 members from the six Gulf Cooperation Council countries, the conference holds great significance for the development of scientific cooperation among Gulf countries. The meeting also provided an opportunity to examine the shared historical and cultural heritage of Gulf societies from the perspectives of different disciplines and countries.

The participation of the Ibn Haldun University delegation in the conference aims to contribute to the development of academic and intellectual relations between Turkey and the Gulf countries. The involvement of researchers from various disciplines at the university in scientific meetings related to the Gulf region is intended to strengthen efforts to examine, in a multidimensional manner, not only the region’s historical experience but also its current political, social, and cultural dynamics.

As part of the symposium, an exhibition was also held, showcasing artifacts obtained from archaeological excavations and fieldwork conducted in Oman, as well as scientific publications in the fields of history and heritage.

As part of the program, participants also had the opportunity to visit some of Dhofar’s leading archaeological, historical, and touristic sites, examining the region’s historical and cultural heritage firsthand.
